This project involves the addition and renovation of a heritage home in Thornhill, Ontario. Originally built as a modest worker’s homestead, the house features a front-facing gable with a steep roof, a simple rectangular plan, and clapboard siding—hallmarks of the local vernacular.
The design preserves the historical character of the original structure while adapting it for contemporary family life. The steep gable and front elevation are retained as defining elements, anchoring the home within its historical context. New interventions are conceived in dialogue with the original form—clearly contemporary yet respectful in scale, material, and proportion.
Through a careful balance of restoration and transformation, the project extends the life of the existing building while supporting new patterns of living. It honors the past not through replication, but through contrast, clarity, and continuity.
